Volunteer Programs

Sustainable DC has two volunteer programs to formally get involved:

Sustainable DC Ambassadors

To help get out the word about sustainability across the District, Sustainable DC launched a volunteer program called Sustainable DC Ambassadors.

While all District residents can volunteer in the community, Ambassadors take it one step further by connecting their neighbors with the benefits of a more sustainable city and ensuring the community is involved in the process moving forward. Each spring we invite folks to apply to be Ambassadors. Then, after a brief orientation with Sustainable DC staff, Ambassadors attend events where they reach out to residents, neighborhoods, community groups and businesses to talk about the Sustainable DC Plan. By serving as a sustainability liaison, Ambassadors meet and work with other District residents interested in the sustainable future of our city and show people how to get involved! Check out our photo gallery for pictures of our 2016 cohort in action and read more about the program here.

Sustainable DC Volunteers

The ambitious goals of Sustainable DC will not be achieved without real action by the community. In addition to making everyday changes in our lives like using less water and electricity, acting together as a city is necessary in reaching our goals and targets. That’s why we created Sustainable DC Volunteers!

Through biweekly e-mails, Sustainable DC Volunteers connects residents with a wide range of hands-on environmental volunteer opportunities such as participating in community cleanups, helping to plant and care for trees, removing invasive plants, all while meeting new friends and having fun! For the most part, Sustainable DC Volunteers won’t be hosting its own events, but rather partnering with non-profit partners and helping connect volunteers to their events.

Sound good? Here’s how to get involved:

  1. Sign up to be a Sustainable DC Volunteer here!
  2. Biweekly e-mails: Check for biweekly e-mails to view a list of volunteer opportunities and then sign up to participate with the folks organizing the event! Not receiving an e-mail? E-mail us  at Sustainable.future@dc.gov and we’ll fix it!
  3. Volunteer: Attend the event and have fun!
  4. Log: After the event, log your hours. It’s quick and painless. Go to http://www.trackitforward.com/site/sustainable-dc, create a free account, and input your time.  Need an incentive to log? We’re giving prizes to volunteers with the most hours!

Questions? E-mail us at Sustainable.future@dc.gov.

Also be sure to check out our Sustainable DC calendar to see up-to-date volunteer opportunities. You can also visit ServeDC to learn more ways to volunteer for specific causes across the city!
