Learn more about some projects and initiatives already underway to make DC a national leader in sustainability!
To become the healthiest, greenest, and most livable city in the nation, the District is developing long-term sustainability projects and initiatives. The success of these initiatives will require the collaborative effort of the District government, community members, and local businesses.
Funding Sustainability Now
Even before the plan was released in 2012, the Mayor of the District of Columbia committed $4.5 million in 2013 to fund innovative sustainability projects across the city. Through a competitive application process, District agencies proposed projects to test new innovations contributing to the District’s sustainable future or plan for large, longer-term projects. Some projects were proposed as community partnerships with local stakeholders to incorporate their experience and knowledge into their plans. These projects are a significant early investment to move the Sustainable DC Plan forward and demonstrate how the District is leading the way to make our city more sustainable. In February 2014, the Mayor announced an additional $2.35 million in funded sustainability projects.
